The courtyard garden was transformed into a water-sensitive outdoor space designed to support learning, play, and sustainable drainage.
OVERVIEW
This courtyard garden at Moulsecoomb Primary School in Brighton was reimagined as a water-friendly landscape focused on education, play, and environmental responsibility. The site sits close to a source protection zone and is susceptible to surface water flooding, making sustainable drainage a central part of the brief.
The project incorporates a range of SuDS elements designed to manage rainwater visibly and effectively. Roof downpipes feed into rain planters and cobble channels, directing water through the garden and into a central retention pond. An overhead channel with a spout feature introduces water into an ornamental pond before it flows onward, creating a clear and engaging water journey through the space. Permeable paving further supports drainage while contributing to the overall layout.
Alongside the drainage features, the garden includes a large pergola, pond decking, herb planters, water barrels, seating, and a chicken enclosure, allowing the space to be used for outdoor learning and play. Accessibility was carefully considered to ensure the garden can be enjoyed by pupils of varying abilities.
The project was delivered within a live school environment, with restricted access through the building and strict safety requirements throughout construction. Despite logistical challenges and supply chain pressures, the completed garden now provides a calm, functional, and educational outdoor space. The courtyard acts as an exemplar rain garden, supporting biodiversity, reducing flood risk, and encouraging wider adoption of SuDS within school environments.
